The Herald
In their time
Heralds began as announcers and organisers at tournaments and became experts in coats of arms, recording who bore which arms and settling disputes. They carried messages between armies, counted the dead after battle and managed ceremonies at court. Heralds served the crown or great lords, and in England the royal heralds were incorporated as the College of Arms in the late fifteenth century. They held a respected, specialist standing.
