The Escheator
In their time
The escheator guarded the crown's feudal rights over land. When a tenant-in-chief died, he held an inquest into what land the dead person held and who the heir was, and took the lands into the king's hands until the heir paid relief or, if under age, until wardship was settled. Escheators were appointed for counties or groups of counties and were often local gentry. Their inquests are a rich source for historians of landholding.
