The Customs officer
In their time
Regular customs duties on wool, hides and later cloth and other goods were levied by the crown from the later thirteenth century, collected at designated ports. Customs collectors and controllers, appointed by the crown, recorded cargoes and took the duty, while searchers looked for smuggled goods. Wool was the great prize, and the customs became one of the crown's most important sources of money. The posts could be lucrative and were sometimes held by merchants themselves.
