In their time
Printing reached England when William Caxton set up his press at Westminster in the 1470s, and the trade soon concentrated in London. Printers produced books, pamphlets, almanacs and official proclamations, while bookbinders sewed and bound them in boards and leather. Printers depended on paper, much of it imported, and on patrons and buyers. The crown watched the press closely, and the Stationers' Company came to regulate the trade.
