The Specialist
In their time
Medieval England had experts who were sought out for particular knowledge: master masons consulted on great buildings, engineers who laid water conduits, mining men, and learned clerks who advised lords and towns. Such people were usually engaged for a task or retained by a patron. Guilds did not generally salary university graduates to improve a craft, and there was no recognised class of 'specialist'.
