In their time
Schools in medieval England were attached to cathedrals, monasteries, collegiate churches, chantries, hospitals and guilds, and mostly taught Latin grammar to boys headed for the Church, the law or trade. Schoolmasters were usually clerics or university men, and the birch rod was their emblem. Wealthy households hired private tutors for their children. Education spread in the later Middle Ages as bishops, merchants and guilds founded new grammar schools.
