The Chantry priest
In their time
A chantry was an endowment to pay a priest to sing masses for the souls of the founder and their family, often at a side altar in a parish church or cathedral. Wealthy townsfolk, guilds and lords founded them in large numbers in the later Middle Ages. Chantry priests often had spare time and helped in the parish or taught in schools. The chantries were abolished by the crown in the late 1540s.
