The Pardoner
In their time
Pardoners were licensed to collect alms for a church, hospital or cause, offering in return indulgences that remitted penance for sin. Many travelled widely with their letters of authority, and some were fraudulent, selling fake relics and promising more than the Church allowed. Chaucer's Pardoner is the famous satire. Their trade was attacked by reformers and ended with the English Reformation.
