The Sexton or gravedigger
In their time
The sexton, originally the sacristan, looked after the church building and its contents, rang the bells and in time dug the graves in the churchyard. He was a lay parish officer, appointed by the parson or the parishioners, and paid with small fees and dues. Humble but necessary, he knew every family in the parish, since he buried their dead.
