The Friar
In their time
The friars, chiefly Franciscans and Dominicans, arrived in England in the 1220s, followed by Carmelites and Austin friars. Unlike monks, they lived by begging and preaching in towns, working among the urban poor and in the universities. Popular preachers and confessors, they were also criticised for rivalry with parish clergy and, later, for wealth that seemed at odds with their vows. Their houses were dissolved with the monasteries.
