In their time
Monks, nuns and canons lived by a rule in communities that were among the great landlords of medieval England, holding manors, running granges and trading wool. Benedictines, Cistercians and Augustinian canons each had their own emphasis: prayer, remote farming, or pastoral work. Monasteries were centres of learning, hospitality and charity, and many took in children of the gentry. All were dissolved by the crown between 1536 and 1540.
