The Cousin
In their time
In medieval England family was the first source of labour, credit and trust. A poorer relative might join a household as a servant, apprentice or helper, often on kinder or looser terms than a stranger, and kin networks carried people from the countryside into town trades. Such arrangements were usually informal, bound by obligation and expectation rather than written contract.
