In their time
Servants made up a large share of many late medieval towns' people, and most were young and unmarried, living under the master's roof as part of the household. They cooked, fetched, laundered and minded shop, answering to the master and mistress much as children did. Service was often a stage of life rather than a fixed station: a spell in a household before marriage, for board, lodging and wages, commonly on a yearly hiring, though town servants were also taken on for shorter terms.
