The Groom

In their time

A groom kept the household's horses: feeding, watering, mucking out, grooming and walking them, and readying them for a journey. In a great household the stable was a department of its own under a marshal of the stables (in the royal household, later, the Master of the Horse), with grooms near the bottom of it. In a merchant's or gentry house one groom might do it all, depending on the smith for shoeing and the saddler for harness.
