The Steward
In their time
The steward was the senior officer of a lordly household or estate, overseeing its lands, courts, rents and accounts on behalf of the lord. On great estates he held the manor courts and supervised the bailiffs and reeves below him; in the household he managed provisioning and staff. He was usually a man of some standing, often gentry or a trained administrator. When an heir was under age, the lands passed into wardship, and it was usually the guardian's own officers who ran them.
