The Factor
In their time
A factor was an agent who bought and sold on another's behalf, usually for a merchant who could not be everywhere at once. English wool and cloth merchants kept factors in foreign marts and in other towns, trusting them with goods and money under written instructions. Many were younger kinsmen or former apprentices of the merchant. The role demanded literacy, careful accounts and trust, and could be a stepping-stone to trading on one's own account.
