The Moneyer

In their time

Moneyers struck coins under licence from the crown, and in the earlier Middle Ages there were many mints across England, with the moneyer's name stamped on each coin so fraud could be traced. That practice ended with Edward I's recoinage of 1279, and minting was concentrated in London and a few other places, including York and Canterbury. Moneyers answered for the weight and fineness of the coin, and those who cheated could be severely punished.
