The Pawnbroker
In their time
Lending money against goods left as security was common in medieval towns, though it was often done informally by townsfolk rather than by a distinct trade. The Church condemned usury, and lenders of all kinds were viewed with suspicion. Italian merchants known as Lombards became associated with lending and pledges, which is why the three golden balls, a Lombard sign, later marked pawnbrokers' shops. Borrowers were usually the poor and those short of cash.
