In their time
Goldsmiths made plate, jewellery and ornaments of gold and silver, and in London they formed one of the great companies, testing and marking silver for purity. Because they handled precious metal, they also dealt in bullion and coin, and money-changers exchanged foreign coin under crown control. Their later role as bankers taking deposits grew mainly in the seventeenth century. They served the crown, the Church and the wealthy.
