The Church forbade Christians to charge interest, so lending at interest was a legal and moral grey area. Before their expulsion in 1290, Jews in England were permitted to lend at interest under royal protection, and the crown taxed them heavily. Italian merchant bankers and many Christian lenders, before and after, used indirect methods to disguise interest. Only an Act of 1545 allowed interest openly, up to ten per cent.
