Law and the Crown · from the first age

The Sheriff's man

In their time

The sheriff was the crown's chief officer in each shire, collecting royal revenues, holding the county court, running the gaol and executing royal writs. He could not do it alone, so he relied on under-sheriffs, bailiffs of the hundreds and a crowd of lesser men who served writs, made arrests and escorted prisoners. These men were often resented for extortion, and complaints against sheriffs' officers are a recurring theme of medieval grievance.
