The Tax collector
In their time
Parliamentary taxes, such as the lay subsidies on movable goods, were assessed and gathered locally by collectors appointed for each county and town, who answered to the Exchequer. They were usually local men of standing rather than professionals, and the work carried personal risk because they could be held liable for shortfalls. Heavy taxation provoked resentment, and hostility to tax collection was one spark of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381.
