The Convoy captain
In their time
At sea, merchant ships sailed in company for protection, especially in wartime, and the wool fleets to Calais and the wine fleets from Gascony were at times ordered to sail together under armed escort. Overland, merchants heading to fairs often travelled in groups for safety, though leadership was informal. A hired captain commanding a land convoy is not a well-documented English role; the nearest real figures are masters of fleets and leaders of armed escorts.
