The Scout
In their time
Armies sent out scouts and scurriers to find the enemy, judge the ground and look for supplies, and good intelligence could decide a campaign. Scouting was a military duty done by light horsemen rather than a civilian trade. Away from war, merchants and lords relied on messengers, travellers and local people for news of the roads ahead. A hired peacetime scout is more a game convenience than a recorded occupation.
