The Fishmonger
In their time
Fish was essential because the Church forbade meat on many days of the year, including Fridays and all of Lent. Fishmongers sold fresh fish from rivers and the sea, and salted or dried fish such as herring and stockfish that kept for months. In London the fishmongers were a powerful company. The trade depended on fishermen, salters and carriers, and on fast days demand soared.
