The Miller
In their time
The miller ground grain into flour for the community, usually taking a fixed share of the grain, the multure, as his fee. On many manors the mill belonged to the lord and tenants were obliged to use it, so the miller was often the lord's tenant and a figure people both depended on and mistrusted. Millers had a lasting reputation for cheating on the measure, which Chaucer's Miller embodies.
