In their time
Spicers dealt in pepper, ginger, cinnamon, sugar and other costly imports that came through Italian and later other merchants. Grocers originally sold wholesale in bulk, 'en gros', and in London the grocers absorbed the pepperers and spicers into one powerful company. Their trade overlapped with the apothecary's, since spices were also medicines. They served wealthy households and the cooks of great kitchens.
