The Shepherd
Also swineherd, cowherd
In their time
Sheep carried the medieval English economy, since wool was the country's great export, and the shepherd was trusted with a lord's or a village's most valuable stock. He moved flocks between pastures, folded them on the arable to dung it, and saw them through lambing, washing and shearing. On big monastic and lay estates, head shepherds were valued servants, sometimes given perks such as a share of lambs or milk. Swineherds and cowherds did similar work for pigs and cattle.

What they need
No tools of their own.
How they learn
They learn herding by doing it: the work is practice, and practice raises their rank.
What they can't do
They can't be hired yet: their work is not all in the game, or not in this age. They don't buy or sell; their script can't trade. Still to come: graze, move stock and cull.
