In their time
Most ordinary houses were roofed with thatch of straw, reed or heather, and thatchers kept them weathertight. In towns, fear of fire led authorities to push for tiles or slate, and tilers became more common. Plasterers covered walls with lime plaster or daub. These were on-site trades, often hired by the day, and depended on farmers for straw, kilns for tiles and lime burners for plaster.
