The Vintner
In their time
England grew some grapes, but most wine was imported, especially from Gascony, which was English-held from 1152 to 1453. Vintners imported and sold wine, and in London they were one of the wealthiest livery companies. The trade depended on shipping, coopers for the casks, and royal favour, since the crown claimed a 'prise' of wine from incoming cargoes. Wine was a drink for the better-off; ordinary folk drank ale.
