In their time
Rakers were employed by town authorities, often by ward or parish, to sweep the streets and cart away dung and refuse to dumps outside the walls or to the river. Townsfolk were expected to keep the street before their own doors clean, and the raker cleared the rest. It was humble, dirty work, but towns took it seriously enough to fine householders who threw rubbish in the street.
