The Water carrier

In their time

Before piped supplies, water carriers brought water from rivers, wells and springs to households that had no well of their own, carrying it in buckets, tankards or barrels on carts. In larger towns they formed a recognisable trade. Their business shrank where towns built conduits, lead pipes feeding public cisterns, though they often went on carrying water from the conduit to people's doors.
