The Wool brogger
In their time
Broggers were middlemen who bought wool from farmers and small producers, often before shearing, and sold it on to larger merchants or clothiers. The name is found in the fourteenth century and was common in the Tudor wool trade. They were essential to the trade but often criticised for driving up prices, and the crown sometimes tried to restrict them. Broggers travelled from farm to farm and market to market, relying on packhorses and carriers.
